FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Art Meets Science at Themed Exhibition on April 11th

Chicago, IL (March 23rd, 2009)—Celebrating their two-year anniversary, Chicago-based art collective Deadline Projects presents Absolute Zero, a one-night exhibition of multi-disciplinary art at Happy Dog Gallery in Wicker Park.  In their 2009 opening show, local artists display new work inspired by scientific theories of unattainable purity and undefinable states of being.  Absolute Zero is a free event and opens to the public on Saturday, April 11th, from 6pm to 11pm.  Live music will be performed by Moment Sound.

By definition, 'absolute zero' is the coldest temperature theoretically possible, which is theoretically impossible to achieve.  In other words, it's cold.  Colder than a Chicago winter-- an unattainable, absolute zero.   In temperatures close to absolute zero, matter takes on unusual properties and state changes.  What would actually happen to matter at absolute zero can only be hypothesized.  As is often unavoidable, scientists find they reach a human limit to their research.   As artists, we translate and illustrate our human limitations.

Participating artists include:  Jeremy Bolen, carlsweets, Miguel Guzman, nikki hollander, Damien James, Rob Jeffries, Jason Judd, Blake Parish Lewis, Sarah Perez, Holly Sabin, Stephen Shapiro, David Soukup, and Shawn Stucky.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Photographer Stephen Shapiro explores the visual and metaphorical aspects of the rigid structure of atoms at absolute zero, with focus on the lack of energy which brings them to that point and keeps them from leaving.  Working with the idea of degrees, Jason Judd uses mechanical reproduction to increase and enhance visual noise with every new reproduction of the last existing piece, mimicking a rise in energy caused by the increase of temperature.  Sculptor and photographer Sarah Perez plays on the idea of "zero" in her work as she channels an emotional state of absolute emptiness.  Stencil Artist David Soukup, who finds influence in the urban landscape, explores a visual sense of state change using atmospheric perspective within his photo-realistic stencils.  And, combining inspirations from scientific truth and biblical interpretation, carlsweets uses charcoal to retro-fit the body to modern mathematical limitations and mystify the body with good ole fire and brimstone.

ABOUT US:

The use of themed group shows to facilitate the production of new work is the cornerstone of Deadline Projects, a Chicago art collective comprised of local emerging artists.  Each Deadline Projects event features a central theme with an ever-growing group of participating artists.  All artworks presented at each event are made specifically for the central theme, thus supplying new creative fodder for the artists as well as providing consistently fresh, previously un-exhibited artwork for the unveiling to the masses.  Deadline Projects is dedicated to making each event a unique and memorable experience.

Happy Dog Gallery is located at 1542 N. Milwaukee, 2nd Floor-- just a short walk from the Damen blue line stop.  More information about the show, links to participating artists, and video documentaries of past shows can be found at http://www.deadlineprojects.com.  To learn more about Moment Sound, please visit http://www.momentsound.com.
